At least thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
