EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
