Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
