The Leading Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Position.

Initially, this work may look closer to a challenging university quiz rather than a new pop album by a musician who just had a last hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Split into four separate parts and voiced in 13 languages, we have a dizzying orchestral-influenced work exploring feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical transformation, often by way of the perspective of different female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward on this record, carried by the constant sound of a full symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning songwriter among a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure daring alone makes the work of contemporary artists appear quite modest.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to transcend overly academic chin-stroking is nothing short of miraculous, and sole praise belonging to the artist. While it's not her first project to blend historical sounds and modern styles, the ambitions feel far greater here, with the tightrope walk more precarious. What truly raises her fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich compositions, and engrained drama, is an essential sense of joy. Much like the iconic artist at her height, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, the listener nevertheless want to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That playful spirit comes forth clearly on the stunning piano-led song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge crashes in with comedic force. The track then segues to the wild track featuring racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm of Lux is that you rarely quite know—or even wish to know—where it is going next."

Almost every song ends at a totally different point than how it began. A track examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity with a delicate symphony only to collapsing in electronic chaos. Another, a cut echoing the artist's previous trap-infused work begins out moody and brooding, with prowling vocals, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic choir enter to soften its rough edges.

The Bridge Between Art and Pop

A key achievement on the album involves navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is little coincidence that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable pop songs. One track performed entirely in the English language builds on a refrain that seems to gather more and more nagging melodies as it spins upward. This feat is repeated by a different powerful ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number charms via its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former partner described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux is pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A Art in an era of impending artificial sameness. It rejects solipsism for sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of hidden gems that takes patience to completely mine but never seem like a chore. Where some major pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux offers a sumptuous feast at which the characters around it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flit between conversations about ancient figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering grief, and common stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from pop's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
